HC Deb 21 March 1906 vol 154 cc369-70
MR. LONSDALE (Armagh, Mid.)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether it has been decided to despatch an expedition against the Emir of Hadeija, in Northern Nigeria; what force will be necessary, and what are the circumstances which have rendered this step necessary.

MR. CHURCHILL

Sir F. Lugard has reported that the attitude of a section of the people of Hadeija, which threatens to disturb the peace, makes it advisable to arrest the leaders and for that purpose to strengthen the force which is already stationed there. He has been authorised to strengthen the force accordingly, but it is hoped that the object may be obtained without actual fighting. The strength of the increased force will be about 500 men of the Northern Nigeria Regiment of the West African Frontier Force.
