HC Deb 16 March 1906 vol 153 cc1531-2
SIR BRAMPTON GURDON (Norfolk, S.)

To ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies what is meant in the Papers relating to labour in the Transvaal mines by the expression inspectors conversant with the Chinese language, seeing that in China there are many different languages totally differing from one another.

(Answered by Mr. Churchill.) The inspectors are required to be conversant with the northern dialect of Chinese, as the labourers have nearly all been brought from the north of China.
