HC Deb 15 March 1906 vol 153 cc1434-5
MR. GINNELL

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade, having regard to the requirements of Section 36 of the Act 8th and 9th Victoria, chapter 119, and the fact that General Hutchinson and Major Marindin, inspectors of the Board of Trade, have both reported the Midland Great Western Railway Company as having failed to discharge its duty of maintaining, upholding, and preserving the Royal Canal for the purpose of navigation, and specified certain works as essential to the main tenance of the canal and to the discharge of the company's statutory obligations, and that the non-execution of these works is a serious loss to many, whether the Board of Trade will require the Midland Great Western Railway Company forthwith to execute, not improvements, but the works of restoration and maintenance essential to put the Royal Canal in proper navigable order, in accordance with the statute, the bye-laws made thereunder, and the reports of the inspectors.

MR. LLOYD-GEORGE

The Board of Trade have no power either under the section referred to by the hon. Member or otherwise to take the action suggested.
