HC Deb 15 March 1906 vol 153 cc1393-4
MR. STRAUS (Tower Hamlets, Mile End)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give a list of the names and addresses and occupations of the members of the different alien immigration boards; and whether he will also say on what system and by whose recommendation these gentlemen have been appointed.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Gladstone.) The members of the boards were appointed after consultation with the mayors of the various towns and other persons of representative position. The qualifications required by the Act, and the premise of my predecessor that labour should be represented on the panels from which the boards are formed, were explained, and it was requested that names of persons willing, and known in the locality as suitable to undertake the responsible duties imposed on the boards, might be furnished. It was on these recommendations that the members were originally appointed, while additions have been and can be made to their number from time to time. The question of publication is under my consideration.
