HC Deb 15 March 1906 vol 153 cc1384-5
MR. DUFFY (Galway, S.)

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state the of number of evicted tenants on the Lewis estate, Balinagar, Loughrea; how many of them have been reinstated in their old holdings through the agency of the Land Act, 1903; and what steps do the Government propose to take with a view of reinstating them in their old homes.

(Answered by Mr. Bryce.) The Estates Commissioners inform me that they received twenty-one applications for reinstatement from evicted tenants on this estate. None of these have been reinstated. The Commissioners referred the applications to an inspector, with the view of ascertaining whether an arrangement for reinstatement could be arrived at with the owner, but the negotiations have so far failed. The claims of the evicted tenants will be further considered, in the event of untenanted land in the locality being acquired by the Commissioners.
