HC Deb 14 March 1906 vol 153 cc1255-6
MR. O'SHAUGHNESSY (Limerick, W.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the agricultural portion of the Ellis estate, in the parish of Abbeyveale, in the county of Limerick, is about to be sold under the Land Act, 1903, and that the tenants of houses in the town of Abbeyveale on the estate, to nearly all of which there is land attached, are willing to buy their holdings under the Act; and whether, seeing that almost all these houses were built by the tenants, under the circumstances the Estates Commissioners will sanction the advance to the agricultural tenants, without inquiring into the matter, and having the town tenants included in the sale of the estate.

* MR. BRYCE

The Estates Commissioners inform me that the originating application in respect of the sale of this estate sets out thirty-three acres of the town of Abbeyveale as property in the occupation of the vendor which he does not propose to sell, as being outside the provisions of the Land Purchase Acts. The sale of the estate will be dealt with in order of priority, and the Commissioners will consider the position of the town tenants.

MR. O'SHAUGHNESSY

Can the estate be sold if these thirty-three acres are excluded? † See (4) Debates, cliii., 864.

* MR. BRYCE

It is for the Commissioners to decide whether they will buy only part of an estate.

MR. O'SHAUGHNESSY

Will the right hon. Gentleman ask the Commissioners to inquire into this matter before they advance any purchase money?

* MR. BRYCE

Clearly the matter is before them.
