HC Deb 08 March 1906 vol 153 cc631-2
* MR. ASHLEY

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether the Government contemplate taking any steps to throw the whole or any part of the upkeep of main roads on the Imperial Exchequer instead of as at present on the rates, in view of the increase in the heavy and light motor traffic.

* THE CHANCELLOR OF THF EXCHEQUER (Mr. ASQUITH,) Fifeshire, E.

I have already promised that this shall be considered when the general question of local taxation comes to be dealt with. I am not prepared to say more at this stage.

* MR. ASHLEY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is a very pressing question in the country just now?

* MR. ASQUITH

All questions connected with local taxation are very pressing.
