HC Deb 07 March 1906 vol 153 cc427-8
MR. O'SHEE (Waterford, W.)

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in view of the appointment of a Royal Commission on the subject of canals in Great Britain, he will consider the advisability of that Commission including Ireland in the scope of its inquiries; whether, in that event, some additional members of the Commission can be appointed to deal with Irish canals only; or, in the alternative, whether he will recommend the appointment of a Viceregal Commission.

(Answered by Mr. Bryce.) Ireland is included in the scope of the Canals Commission, and two gentlemen resident in Ireland have been appointed Commissioners. It will, in my opinion, be an advantage to Ireland that the ability and experience of the Commissioners as a whole should be brought to bear on the very important question of developing internal navigation in Ireland.
