HC Deb 28 June 1906 vol 159 cc1128-9
MR. FELL (Great Yarmouth)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can state the name of the individual who forwarded to the authorities the evidence on which the charge was framed against the manager of the Cason Mining Company, and who demanded his prosecution.

MR. CHURCHILL

I have at present no official information, but a report upon the case has been called for by telegraph and will reach us by mail.

MR. FELL

I beg to ask the Undersecretary of State for the Colonies whether the prosecution of the manager of the Cason Mining Company for cruelty to a Chinese coolie took place with the authority, or at the instance of, the Colonial Office; if so, on what evidence was such prosecution ordered; and what steps the Government propose to take to recompense the manager for the mistake made.

MR. CHURCHILL

The prosecution took place without the cognisance of the Colonial Office.
