HC Deb 20 June 1906 vol 159 cc172-3
LORD BALCARRES (Lancashire, Chorley)

On behalf of the hon. Member for Gravesend, I beg to ask the President of the Board of Education whether his attention has been called to an attempt made by the Glamorgan education authority to utilise the labour certificate examinations as a test of general school efficiency; and whether this action is compatible with the regulations of the Board of Education, and what steps the Board propose to take to safeguard the educational interests of the schools.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF EEDUCATION (Mr. BIRRELL, Bristol, N.)

My attention has been called to this matter and the local education authority has been informed that the Board of Education cannot accede to any arrangement by which His Majesty's Inspectors' examinations of individual children in a school for labour certificates shall be converted into a general examination of the whole school.
