HC Deb 19 June 1906 vol 159 cc41-2
MR. H. R. MANSFIELD

I beg to ask the hon. Member for the Elland Division, as a Parliamentary Charity Commissioner, if he can state the amount of capital invested by the Charity Commissioners in foreign securities and the amount of agricultural land sold by the Charity Commissioners during the last ten years.

MR. TREVELYAN (Yorkshire, W. R., Elland)

The investments of capital directed by the Commissioners are limited to securities authorised for trust funds by the rules of Court, and are not made accordingly in foreign securities. The amounts so invested by founders or trustees which have been transferred to, and are now held by, the official trustees are as follows—

£
Foreign Government Funds 11,600
Other Foreign Securities 56,500
Statistics of the amount of land sold with consent of the Commissioners have been recorded only for the last four years, in accordance with the promise made by them on July 29th, 1901, at request of the hon. Member for the Ilkeston Division of Derbyshire, distinguishing, however, merely between land in urban and rural districts. The amount sold in the four years in rural districts was 5,727 acres, of which the bulk was probably agricultural land.
