HC Deb 19 June 1906 vol 159 cc33-4
MR. O'DOWD (Sligo, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that a feeling of alarm has been created amongst agriculturists in Ireland owing to the action of the War Office in altering the tenders for the supply of meat to the Army; whether he is aware that many meetings of public bodies have been held throughout the country, at which Resolutions have been passed declaring that such action on the part of the War Office will be detrimental to the best interests of the farming classes in Ireland; and whether, in view of such facts, he is prepared to take any action in the matter.

MR. HALDANE

Representations on this subject have reached the War Office, but I see no reason to reverse the decision of the War Office in regard to the tenders for the supply of meat to the troops.

LORD TURNOUR (Sussex, Horsham)

Has the right hon. Gentleman also received representations from any bodies of English agriculturists?

MR. HALDANE

I am not sure; I think it is very likely I have.
