LONSDALEI beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what steps are being taken to ensure that the assurances given by the Wai-wu-pu, that no change is contemplated in the method of administering the Chinese Customs, will be officially promulgated for the instruction of all who are engaged in the department.
§ SIR EDWARD GREYHis Majesty's Charge d'Affaires at Peking reported on June 16th that the offices of the new Administrator would be ready in three weeks, when instructions would be issued to Sir R. Hart to continue as before. These instructions would be in accord with the assurances received by His Majesty's Government, and being issued officially would be public.
