§ MR. GLADSTONENo, Sir; I am sorry that I cannot do so. As stated yesterday in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for South West Ham, the cost of the necessary augmentation to the Force would be so great that it could not be met without exceeding the limit of 9d. in the £ fixed by the Police Rate Act, 1868, to the Metropolitan Police rate.
