To ask the Secretary to the Admiralty what is the total accommodation of the Naval and Marine Barracks respectively in the United Kingdom and abroad, exclusive of coastguards; and in how many cases disciplinary powers for punishment over more than 2,000 men are vested in the hands of one Naval or Marine officer.

(Answered by Mr. Edmund Robertson.) The total accommodation in the United Kingdom is as follows:—Naval Barracks—539 commissioned officers, 16,588 warrant officers and petty officers and seamen. Marine Barracks—217 commissioned officers, 7,060 warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men. Abroad:—Marine Barracks—Thirteen commissioned officers, 543 warrant officers, non-commissioned officers, and men. As regards the second part of the Question, this condition only obtains in the Royal Naval Barracks at Portsmouth, Devonport, and Chatham.
