HC Deb 11 May 1905 vol 146 c38
MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that an Afghan youth named Ayoom Khan, who in February last was awaiting his trial before a subordinate magistrate on a charge of theft, was, by order of the district magistrate, Mr. Carey, removed from Hooghly Gaol, summarily tried, and sentenced by him to nominal imprisonment until the following morning; and, seeing that the Lieutenant-Governor stigmatised the district magistrate's conduct as hardly discreet, will he ask the Government of India to make some inquiry into the case and report thereon.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Brodrick.) I have no information as to the case referred to in the Question; but, if the facts are as stated, it seems to me to be one which has been adequately dealt with by the proper authorities.
