HC Deb 04 May 1905 vol 145 cc919-20
MR. T. W. RUSSELL (Tyrone, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the fact that the grants to University Colleges, i.e., to London, Victoria, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, and to Scotch and Welsh Universities have increased from £27,0C0 in 1903–4 to £54,000 in 1904–5, and to £100,000 in 1905–6, he can state how the sum voted has been allocated as between the different colleges; and if any equivalent grant has been made to any Irish colleges.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY (Mr. VICTOR CAVENDISH,) Derbyshire, W.

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by the Chancellor of the Exchequer on March 22nd† last, in which he stated that the increase of grants to Universities and University Colleges, Great Britain, was the first approach to an equivalent grant to England as compared with the other portions of the three kingdoms. There is, therefore, no intention of increasing the grants to Irish colleges. Scotland and Wales are unaffected by the increase. The allocation of the Votes for 1903–4 and 1904–5 will be found set out in Parliamentary Paper Cd. 2422 of 1905. The distribution for 1905–6 has not yet been settled.

MR. T. W. RUSSELL

Why is not the allocation of these grants set out in the Appropriation Accounts?

MR. VICTOR CAVENDISH

They are set out in the Paper I have referred to.
