MR. DELANY (Queen's County, Ossory)

To ask the Postmaster-General whether he will state what is the number of learners employed in the Post Office service in Ireland at the present time, giving length of service and rate of wages; also corresponding particulars in connection with England and Wales.

(Answered by Lord Stanley.) The numbers on or about the 14th March were: Ireland—Male, 260; Female, 145. England and Wales—Male, 1,481; Female, 702. Scotland—Male, 232: Female, 146. The usual rate of wages is 6s. a week for males, and 5s. for females. The rates for learners with more than two years service have just been increased. The average length of service is under two years.
