To ask the Postmaster-General whether, in view of his predecessor's assurances to telegraphists that no officers entering the service before 1896 should be compelled to perform duties in the postal branch, he will explain why orders have now been given that certain telegraphists entering before that date are to take duty in sorting offices or be removed from the town in which they have lived.

(Answered by Lord Stanley.) I am not aware that my predecessor gave any such assurance as that to which the hon. Member refers. I shall be obliged if he will inform me when, and to whom, the statement in question was made.
