HC Deb 21 March 1905 vol 143 c648
MR. CROMBIE (Kincardineshire)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer at what date the collection of the income-tax was first added to the other duties of the officers of Inland Revenue (Excisemen) in Scotland.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN,) Worcestershire, E.

The collection of incometax in Scotland through "Excise officials" of the Inland Revenue was first made in 1854. But the particular officers who may be taken to fall under the term "Excisemen" were not so employed until 1879.
