HC Deb 20 March 1905 vol 143 c428
MR. NANNETTI (Dublin, College Green)

To ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the wages paid to the sailors and firemen employed on the Royal Mail steamer "Orepesa," of the Pacific Line, are in accordance with the Fair Wage Resolution of this House; and whether such rate of wages is equal to that paid by other steamship companies engaged in the same trade carrying the Royal mails from Southampton and other ports.

(Answered by Lord Stanley.) The Secretary to the Treasury has requested me to reply to this Question, as it relates primarily to the Post Office. I have no information as to the wages paid on the steamer mentioned by the hon. Member. It has always been held that the Fair Wages Resolution of the House does not apply to contracts with steamship companies for the conveyance of mails.
