HC Deb 14 March 1905 vol 142 c1366
MR. SLOAN

To ask the Secretary of State for War what is the approximate cost incurred by railing the troops in two half battalions to and from Newry, together with the cost of their field training in Newry.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Arnold-Forster.) My hon. friend apparently refers to the move of the 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers from Belfast to Newry, which took place in order to make room for another regiment returning home from South Africa. Half the battalion was moved in February, 1904, and half in May, at a cost of about £40 each move. The battalion did not return from Newry to Belfast. The cost of the field training at Newry cannot be calculated without considerable labour.
