§ MR. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)To ask the Secretary of State for India, 914 having regard to the fact that petitions from natives of India for the redress of grievances have been again laid upon the Table of the House this session, will he take steps to make known to the people of India that no action in regard to such petitions is taken either by the House or by the Secretary of State for India.
(Answered by Mr. Secretary Brodrick.) As promised in the Answer which I gave to the hon. Member for Ipswich on July 19th†last, a copy of the Report of the Select Committee on Public Petitions was sent to the Government of India last autumn, and they were instructed to make the recommendations of the Committee widely known. I find that my despatch and its enclosures were published in the Gazette of India on September 15th last, and were also sent to local governments and administrations for publication in their Gazettes, and for distribution to commissioners and district officers, who have no doubt done their best to give publicity to the matter.
