HC Deb 09 March 1905 vol 142 c915
MR. HERBERT ROBERTS

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that, under the rules framed by the Chancellor of the Bombay University, Mr. Justice Tyabji, Mr. Justice Chandravarkar, Mr. Justice Batty, Sir Pherozshah Mehta, the Hon. Mr. Setalwad, and other Fellows of the University have been excluded from the Faculty of Arts; and whether, seeing that these Fellows have for many years taken a leading part in the management of the University, he will withhold his sanction to the Indian Universities (Validation) Act of 1905 until this defect is remedied.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Brodrick.) I understand that the gentlemen named in the Question, though not members of the Faculty of Arts, are, nevertheless, Fellows of the Bombay University and members of the Faculty of Law, and as such have the opportunity of taking part in the management of the University in the future as in the past. I see no reason, therefore, on this account to advise His Majesty to disallow the Act mentioned in the Question, which is already law.
