MR. HERBERT SAMUEL (Yorkshire, Cleveland)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will state what were the numbers of white men, of Kaffirs, and of Chinese employed on the gold mines of the Transvaal on May 31st; and what was the ratio of whites employed for every 1,000 coloured, Kaffirs and Chinese together.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) The numbers are:—white, 16,676; coloured, 106,864; Chinese, 38,111. The ratio is 1 white to 8.6 coloured and Chinese.
