HC Deb 29 June 1905 vol 148 c535
SIR EDWARD SASSOON (Hythe)

To ask the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the scarcity of employment in India, and the recorded disinclination of the Indian Government to countenance coolie importation into the Transvaal, he will consider the expediency of arranging with the Soudan Government for drafting Indian labour into the Soudan for the purpose of cotton culture and for the development of that country generally.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Brodrick.) I am not aware that employment is scarce in India; but if the Soudan Government should desire to import Indian labour, and make an application to the Indian Government to that effect it would receive due consideration.
