HC Deb 28 June 1905 vol 148 c380
MR. BOLAND (Kerry, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state how many separate national schools for girls in Ireland have only one room how many of such schools have only one teacher; and whether the Commissioners of National Education regard these single-room and single-teacher female schools as suitable in the sense of Rule 127 (b).

MR. WALTER LONG

The number of girls' schools which have only one room cannot be stated without inquiry, which would take a considerable time. There are 1,212 girls' schools which have only one teacher, and it may be assumed that most of these schools have but one room. Whether such schools are suitable in the sense of Rule 127 (b) depends not only upon the sufficiency of the accommodation, but also upon the capacity and religious persuasion of the teacher, and her efficiency as regards the teaching of infants.
