§ MR. T. W. RUSSELL (Tyrone, S.)I bag to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether his attention has been called to the murder of Mrs. Kate Hassan by her son at Garvagh, county Derry, and to the evidence of the police that they had no power of controlling the sale of ether in the neighbourhood; and, if so, will he take steps to have the law made effective.
§ MR. WALTER LONGThe statement attributed to the police is not quite 102 accurate. Sulphuric ether is scheduled as a poison under Part II. of the Sale of Poisons (Ireland) Act, 1870, the result being that its sale is prohibited except by qualified druggists, and in bottles labelled "Poison," under a penalty not exceeding £5 for the first offence, and £10 for the second and subsequent offences. There appears to be. some reason to believe that ether is secretly sold by unqualified persons in the district referred to, and the police have been instructed to use every effort to bring offenders to justice.
