MACNAMARA (Camberwell, N.)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether receipts were originally obtained for the £250,000 worth of Army stores stated, in Parliamentary Paper 2433, to have been destroyed in South Africa during 1899– 1901; and, if so, why the War Office has entered the words "not known" in the column for the names of the contractor who supplied the stores, in that Parliamentary Paper in respect of over £100,000 worth of destroyed stores.
§ MR. ARNOLD-FORSTERReceipts for money paid to contractors in respect of stores, etc., are always obtained before the charges are passed against Army Votes. The Return in question was compiled from reports of boards held on supplies in South Africa, and in those eases referred to the names of the contractors were not specified by the I boards. As the supplies were obtained from so many different sources, there was no information at the War Office) available to supplement the details for-warded from South Africa.
