§ MR. CAWLEYI beg to ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster whether he is aware that in the urban district of Failsworth, with a population of over 15,000, there is no resident magistrate: and that in the adjoining urban district of Droylsden, with a population of over 12,000, there is no resident magistrate; and whether he will take steps to remedy a state of things in those districts which is causing great inconvenience to the inhabitants.
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE DUCHY OF LANCASTER (Sir WILLIAM WALROND, Devonshire, Tiverton)I have made inquiries and I find that, with the 439 possible exception of the chairman of the Droylsden Urban District Council no county magistrate is actually resident within the areas referred to. I have been in communication with the Lord-Lieutenant of the county and I understand that he is about to recommend to me, for appointment to the county bench gentlemen residing in each of the urban districts in question.
§ MR. CAWLEYIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Lord-Lieutenant has been written to by the Members for the Division, who have got no answer?
§ SIR WILLIAM WALRONDI understand that is so.
