HC Deb 31 July 1905 vol 150 cc949-50
MR. J. P. FARRELL

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General to state whether he is still of opinion that the status of sub-postmasters in Ireland is not one calling for improvement; whether he can state why no salary for a clerk to such offices is allowed even when the members of the family discharge this office to the knowledge of the district surveyor; and will he now direct a full inquiry into the whole subject.

LORD STANLEY

Increased remuneration has recently been granted to sub-postmasters in Ireland and elsewhere, and I am not of opinion that there are sufficient grounds for further improving their pay. The salaries and commissions of sub-postmasters are calculated to cover the cost of the provision of the necessary staff for the duties of the office.
