HC Deb 28 July 1905 vol 150 cc781-2

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That the Bill be now read a third time."

MR. MOONEY: (Dublin County, S.)

I object.

SIR ALBERT ROLLIT (Islington, S.)

said that this Bill was urgently required in the interest of the University of Sheffield and in that of University education in Yorkshire. He hoped, therefore, that his hon. friend would not persist in his objection. There had been an all-round arrangement or understanding on the night on which the Irish Estimates were discussed that this Bill would be allowed to pass, and this having been made between the hon. Member for Down, S. and himself he was sure it would be carried out.

MR. DILLON (Mayo, E.)

said that in regard to the appeal of the hon. Member he would not suggest to his hon. friend not to withdraw his objection on account of the understanding referred to. But for that understanding he certainly would have objected to this Bill, or any Bill giving facilities for English University education, being advanced, so long as the House persistently blocked all facilities for proceeding with a measure for University education in Ireland.

MR. SAMUEL ROBERTS (Sheffield, Ecclesall)

said that, on behalf of the University of Sheffield, he supported the appeal made by the hon. Member for Islington that the hon. Member would be so good as to withdraw his objection to this Bill. He had quite hoped that all objection to this Bill had been settled; but the opposition now offered, at the last moment, had come upon him with surprise. With regard to the remarks of the hon. Member for Mayo, he pointed out that the Bill was simply a ministerial one to transfer the property and liabilities of the old University College to the new University. There was no question of granting any privilege to a University in England which had not been granted in Ireland.

MR. DILLON:

You would not grant us in Ireland the University we want.

MR. SAMUEL ROBERTS

said he really hoped the hon. Member would see his way to withdraw his objection.

MR. MOONEY

said that, in view of the appeals that had been made to him, he would withdraw his objection.

Bill read a third time, and passed, with Amendments.
