HC Deb 20 July 1905 vol 149 c1401
MR. WILLIAM ABRAHAM

I beg to ask the Postmaster General if his attention has been called to the necessity of extending telephonic facilities to the town of Fermoy, by the establishment of an exchange and its connections with the trunk line system, having regard to the importance of the town as a business centre and military station; and whether, seeing that the National Telephone Company would be willing to grant the required facilities, but are prevented in consequence of some agreement with the Post Office which has placed Fermoy and district within a restricted area, he proposes to take any, and, if any, what action in the matter.

LORD STANLEY

My attention has been called to the desire for telephone facilities at Fermoy. The cost of connecting Fermoy with the trunk wire system would, however, be considerable, and at present there does not appear to be enough support to justify the undertaking. I shall, however, be glad to be furnished with the names of those who are willing to become subscribers to an exchange at Fermoy, and if a sufficient number are sent in I will arrange for a canvass of the town to be made.
