HC Deb 18 July 1905 vol 149 cc1084-8

Motion made, and Question proposed, "That this House will, To-morrow, resolve itself into a Committee to consider of making further provision for the construction of works in the United Kingdom and elsewhere for the purposes of the Royal Navy, and of authorising the payment, out of the Consolidated Fund, of such sums as may be necessary for those purposes (King's Recommendation signified)."— (Mr. Pretyman.)

MR. J. H. LEWIS 3 (Flint Boroughs)

thought that, as this was the preliminary stage to the introduction of another Naval Works Bill, the House ought to have some statement on the subject from the Secretary to the Admiralty.

*MR. SPEAKER

Under the Standing Orders no statement could be made at this stage.

MR. EDMUND ROBERTSON (Dundee)

In what position will it be on the Orders to-morrow?

THE PRIME MINISTER AND FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR, Manchester, E.)

said he did not think the Bill was a very controversial measure, but he should be glad to come to some arrangment With the other side as to the stage most convenient for a discussion of its policy.

MR. DALZ1EL (Kirkcaldy Burghs)

asked if it were not the case that the Bill could not possibly be circulated before Friday. Under those circumstances was

it intended to take the Second Reading that day.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

suggested it would be quite as well to take the debate on the Committee stag.

Question put.
