MR. TANKERVILLE CHAMBER-LAYNE (Southampton)To ask the Postmaster-General whether he will consider the question of raising the maximum salary of the telegraph clerks at Southampton, in accordance with the regulations governing the classification of telegraphic offices.

I have received a petition from the overseers (formerly designated "clerks") at Southampton for higher pay, and I informed them about four months ago that I am unable to comply with their request. I am considering a memorial from the sorting clerks and telegraphists at Southampton for a higher scale, and my decision will be announced to the staff in due course.
