HC Deb 17 July 1905 vol 149 cc858-9
MR. SCHWANN (Manchester, N.)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the inconvenience attending the existing practice of imprisonment for debt in Ceylon; and whether he will consider the expediency of causing the law to be amended in this respect, especially as regards its application to the estate population of that colony, in view of the fact that such an alteration of the law would afford these Indian immigrants more adequate protection from the exactions of the chetty, or native moneylender.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) I have no information as to the working of the system, but I will ask the Governor of Ceylon for a report.
