HC Deb 13 July 1905 vol 149 c550
MR. LEIF JONES (Westmoreland, Appleby)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has yet received the report asked for by him from the Governor of the Transvaal on the case of cruelty to a native at the Crœsus Gold Mine, Langlaagte; and whether the contractor, who was convicted and fined for the offence, has been removed from his post: and what are the steps recommended by the Transvaal Government with a view to preventing the occurrence of such offences.

MR. LYTTELTON

I have asked Lord Selborne, as I promised, for a report on this case, but I have not been able to receive a report as yet.

MR. LEIF JONES

Is it coming by cable?

MR. LYTTELTON

No, by mail.

MR. LEIF JONES

Would it not be advisable to cable, seeing that this contractor is still in charge of the mine?

MR. LYTTELTON

This man has already been fined. Lord Selborne has taken steps to prevent a recurrence of such acts, and there is ample evidence that neither he nor I are indifferent in the matter.
