HC Deb 10 July 1905 vol 149 c82
MAJOR EVANS GORDON (Tower Hamlets, Stepney)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the laws governing the flotation and operations of joint stock enterprises in the Transvaal remain the same to-day as they were before the annexation of the country by the British. Crown; and if so, whether he will consider the advisability of moving the Transvaal Government to make such alterations as will assimilate those laws more closely with those which have been found necessary and expedient for the control of joint stock enterprise and the protection of the investing public in the United Kingdom.

THIS SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (MR. LYTTELTON, Warwick and Leamington)

Some amending legislation has been passed since annexation, but the principal law regulating the; management of companies remains the Law No. 5 of 1874, The Transvaal Government has drafted a law consolidating the whole of the Company Law on the lines of the English Acts, 1862 to 1900, but was unable to proceed with legislation last session. I will inquire whether it is proposed to proceed with, the Bill during the present session.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

Can Ministers of the Crown, act as directors of public companies in the Transvaal as in this country?
