HC Deb 06 July 1905 vol 148 cc1344-5
MR. BOLAND

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is now in a position to state the number of schools for girls in Ireland that have only one room; and whether, besides affording the minimum floor space for the number of pupils on the rolls, the Commissioners of National Education require any other structural conditions as necessary in order that a school may be considered suitable in the sense of Rule 127 (b); and, if so, what are these conditions.

MR. WALTER LONG

It would take a considerable time to ascertain the number of such schools, and no good object would be served by doing so, seeing that in schools with one teacher a second room is neither necessary nor desirable. The Commissioners have not thought it necessary to formulate the structural conditions which render a I school "suitable" under Rule 127 (b), The accommodation must be adequate and suitable, and, when necessity arises, an inspection will be made to ascertain the fact.
