HC Deb 04 July 1905 vol 148 cc987-8
MR. SLOAN

I bag to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that a man named James McAlorum, residing at Donaghmore, Newry, employed as surface-man, was informed by letter from the assistant county surveyor on the 25th May that his services had been dispensed with; that McAlorum wrote to the county surveyor asking the reason of his dismissal, but received no reply; and whether, in view of the fact that this man has had twenty-four years service, he will order an inquiry to be made into the case.

MR. WALTER LONG

The Local Government Board have ascertained that this man was dismissed for inattention to duty. The Board have no power to hold an inquiry in the matter except on the application of the county or district council concerned.

MR. SLOAN

But in view of the man's long period of service cannot something be done? Is it not the fact that he was dismissed without any knowledge of the charge against him and without having an opportunity of defending himself.

MR. WALTER LONG

I cannot say; but even if it be so it does not alter the fact that he having been dismissed for dereliction of duty, the Local Government Board have no power to go behind the back of the local authority and order an inquiry.
