HC Deb 27 February 1905 vol 141 cc1317-8
SIR JOHN GORST

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board what steps His Majesty's Government are taking to carry out any of the recommendations of the Committee on Physical Deterioration which relate to matters within the jurisdiction of the Local Government Board.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. WALTER LONG, Bristol, S.)

The recommendations made by the Committee are very numerous, and so far as they relate to matters within the province of my Department, effect could not be given to many of them without legislation. A Committee, which I have appointed after consultation with my right hon. friend the Home Secretary, is inquiring into one important matter referred to by the Committee, viz., vagrancy, and I am giving consideration to the other subjects referred to in the Report so far as I am concerned with them.

SIR JOHN GORST

Is the right hon. Gentleman considering among many other things the question of making regulations as to the milk supply in towns?

MR. WALTER LONG

As my right hon. friend knows, that is an extremely difficult and involved question, and I do not think I could answer it "Yes" or "No." The whole matter is under consideration; and the application of rules would be extremely difficulty not applying to my own Department alone.
