HC Deb 27 February 1905 vol 141 cc1324-5
MR. O'DOWD (Sligo, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland what provision is made for the education of Catholic children in the district of Larkhill, situate near Callooney, county Sligo; whether he is aware that the patron and teacher of the local national school there are Protestants, although 75 per cent. of the children attending are Catholics; and, if so, will he say whether it is the wish of the Commissioners of National Education that where the majority of the children attending a particular school are of one religious denomination the manager of that school should be of the same denomination; and, if so, whether inquiries will be made with the view of having the grievances complained of in this case redressed.

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. WYNDHAM, Dover)

The school at Larkhill is under Protestant management and the teacher is a Protestant. Thirty-four pupils were on the rolls on December 31st last, of whom twenty-one were Protestants and thirteen Catholics. There are two other schools about two miles distant, both under Catholic management.
