§ MR. O'DOWD (Sligo, S.)I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland what provision is made for the education of Catholic children in the district of Larkhill, situate near Callooney, county Sligo; whether he is aware that the patron and teacher of the local national school there are Protestants, although 75 per cent. of the children attending are Catholics; and, if so, will he say whether it is the wish of the Commissioners of National Education that where the majority of the children attending a particular school are of one religious denomination the manager of that school should be of the 1325 same denomination; and, if so, whether inquiries will be made with the view of having the grievances complained of in this case redressed.
§ THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. WYNDHAM, Dover)The school at Larkhill is under Protestant management and the teacher is a Protestant. Thirty-four pupils were on the rolls on December 31st last, of whom twenty-one were Protestants and thirteen Catholics. There are two other schools about two miles distant, both under Catholic management.
