HC Deb 23 February 1905 vol 141 cc1093-4
MR. SHACKLETON

On behalf of the hon. Member for Derby, I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he has any particulars of the riots which took place amongst the Chinese indentured coolies on the Sumner and Jock Mine on Saturday, January 21st last, when thirty-one coolies were arrested, and another coolie, in order to avoid arrest, jumped down No. 3 Shaft and was killed: and will he state what were the sentences inflicted on the prisoners.

MR. LYTTELTON

I presume the hon. Member refers to the Simmer and Jack Mine. The local newspaper of January 23rd contains nothing about any disturbance, and I have received no reports of this occurrence, but I will make inquiry.
