ERNEST GRAYI beg to ask the Secretary to the Board of Education whether, having regard to the terms of Circular 512, the teachers in voluntary schools can be required by the managers of such schools to take children to church on Saints' Days, notwithstanding the attendance by-laws and regulations of the local education authority to the contrary.
§ SIR WILLIAM ANSONThe teachers in voluntary schools are bound to carry out the instructions of the managers as to the religious teaching given in those 647 schools except in so far as such instructions may conflict with by-laws as to school attendance or direction as to secular instruction properly made or given by the local education authority.
§ MR. ERNEST GRAYYes, but the Answer applies to teaching in the schools. This is a case of taking the children to church. Has the right hon. Gentleman anything to say about that?
