MR. AINSWORTH (Argyllshire) moved that a Select Committee be appointed to consider and report on the decrease of population in the crofting counties of Scotland and the causes of and remedies for the same. He hoped the Secretary for Scotland would be able to accede to this request. The right hon. Gentleman knew the immense importance of this question, not only to Scotland, but to the country at large.

Buteshire) said he thought the hon. Member was not really serious in bringing forward the Motion at so late an hour. It would be impossible for the Government to pledge themselves on this matter, because they did not know that there was any necessity for such an inquiry as that proposed. He had not heard a single word from the hon. Member in support of the proposal.
