HC Deb 11 May 1904 vol 134 cc1014-5
MR. JOHN ELLIS (Nottinghamshire, Rushcliffe)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether a Resolution condemning the introduction of Chinese indentured labourers into South Africa has been quite recently unanimously passed by the Legislative Assembly of Cape Colony; and, in that case, will he give its terms and the date when it was adopted.

MR. LYTTELTON

I understand that the terms of the Resolution are as follows:—This House, taking cognisance, as it does with regret, that measures are being taken for the importation of Asiatic labour into South Africa, now re-affirms the opinion it expressed in the Resolution adopted unanimously on the 2nd July, 1903, and re-asserts its strong opposition to any such importation as prejudicial to the interests of all classes of the people of South Africa.

MR. BAYLEY (Derbyshire, Chesterfield)

Was not the Resolution passed unanimously?

MR. LYTTELTON

Without a division.
