HC Deb 04 May 1904 vol 134 c384
MR. EDMUND ROBERTSON (Dundee)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he can state the proportion of publicans' licences to the population in England and Wales in the year 1880.

* THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. AKERS-DOUGLAS,) Kent, St. Augustine's

The proportion appears to have been about in 328 according to the figures of the census of 1871, or, taking the nearer census of 1881, 1 in 375. The figures given in my introductory statement included "on" beerhouses.

MR. EDMUND ROBERTSON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what the proportion is to-day? I think he mentioned it the other day.

* MR. AKERS-DOUGLAS

I cannot recall it just now.
