§ MR. HERBERT SAMUELTo ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can state approximately the number of Asiatics now resident in Johannesburg, and the number resident in the Transvaal as a whole, and how many of these are Chinese.
(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) Lord Milner informs me that the total number of male Asiatics above the age of sixteen resident in the Transvaal is 9,861, of which 981 are Chinese, the number resident in Johannesburg and district is 6,453, of which 952 are Chinese.
