HC Deb 17 March 1904 vol 131 c1383
MR. HENNIKER HEATON (Canterbury)

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether, with a view to diminishing the danger of life at sea, he is taking measures for the connection of all the lighthouses and lightships on the British and Irish coasts by wireless telegraphy.

(Answered by Mr. Gerald Balfour.) Arrangements are being made by the Trinity House for the fitting up of wireless telegraphic apparatus on certain of their lightships on the east coast by way of experiment. The matter is being pushed forward, and an agreement for the use of patent rights has been drawn up, and is now being considered by the various Departments interested. Permission has been granted to Lloyds to establish a wireless telegraphic station at the Fastnet. I am unable to say at present to what extent the system will be applied to other light stations, many of which are already connected by cable with the shore.
