HC Deb 11 March 1904 vol 131 c851
MASTER OF ELIBANK (Edinburgh, Midlothian)

To ask the Secretary for Scotland whether the conditions under which sheriffs to counties are appointed preclude them from becoming Parliamentary Candidates or appearing on political platforms, or whether there is any established usage against their so doing.

(Answered by Mr. A. Graham Murray.) A sheriff cannot become a Parliamentary Candidate, but, except in his own county, there is no reason against his appearing on a political platform in accordance with long established usage.
